Adoption Books We Love

There are so many wonderful children’s books with adoption-related themes; I could not possibly cover all of them in one post. Periodically, I’ll share the adoption books we love. Our daughter is 14 months-old, so we are drawn to shorter books with simple text and colorful pictures. Below are our current favorites. Are there any other books you think should be added to the rotation for this stage? What about as she gets a little older – what adoption-related books do your toddlers love?

Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born by Jamie Lee Curtis. This is a cute story about an infant adoption, which describes the moment the adoptive parents found out about the birth of their child, the rush to the hospital, and what it was like when they brought baby home. When my husband reads it, he changes the words slightly so that it fits our story and it’s oh so cute.

God Found Us You by Lisa Tawn Bergren. In this book, Mama Fox is putting Little Fox to bed and he asks her to retell the story of the day he came home. She describes how she looked for him and waiting a long time for him. They discuss his birth mama and the difficult decision she faced. Little Fox is happy to learn that he made Mama Fox the happiest mother in the world when he came home.

Wish by Matthew Cordell. This book is not adoption specific, but is a cute story of elephant parents who wanted to start a family, but it does not happen right away. They wait a long time, and almost lose hope, until their wish becomes real and their baby arrives. It’s also a board book, which is great for my daughter’s current stage (and desire to put everything in her mouth).

A Mother for Choco by Keiko Kasza. Choco is searching for a mother and starts by trying to find one that looks like him. Just as he’s about to give up, he meets Mama Bear and realizes that the things that make someone a mother have little to do with resemblance. Choco goes home with Mama Bear where he meets her other children (a piglet, a hippo, and an alligator).

I’ve Loved You Since Forever by Hoda Kotb. This book is also not adoption specific. It’s a parent describing to a child that their love has existed forever and that they were always meant to be together. The text is simple and the pictures are beautiful.
